One of our preservation efforts this past year was the restoration of the Hodges
powder and projectile hoist. This consisted of wire brushing flaking rust off
the metal, applying rust converter, and painting OD green. We also disassembled
the hoist proper, removed the chain, fixed broken and bent links, greased the
gears, and replaced the hand crank, using several "keys"fabricated
to hold the gears and crank in place.
At the end of the day, we marched back to the barracks.
We stayed in a newly renovated WWII wooden barracks as our usual WWI-period barracks was having fire suppression equipment installed. We ate dinner in the barracks, and in keeping with the period, three officers and one enlisted member wore their class A uniforms (pinks and greens).
Sunday morning we arose early and we took about three hours to tour "nine-gun battery" and take in the sites around Ft. Hancock. By 1100 hours, we were on station at the battery ready for visitors. They were not long in coming. We had just enough time to get a group photo at the 6-inch M1900 rifle.
