Harbor Defense Lantern Tour

Friday 23 October, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

View of a gun battery at night illuminated by period lighting

Step back in time to October 1943 for a Harbor Defense Lantern Tour that culminates at Battery Gunnison/New Battery Peck.

The tour will begin at Bldg #28, the Guard House (Fort Hancock Museum). Fortifications visited will be the Harbor Defense Command Post (HDCP), also known as the mortar battery, Battery Granger, and Battery Gunnison/Peck.

Your guides will be members of AGFA, a National Park Service Philanthropic Partner, who restore, preserve, and interpret Battery Gunnison/New Peck and other National Landmark fortifications at Fort Hancock on behalf of the National Park Service and our fellow Americans.

Battery Gunnison/Peck will be visited by moving in a time-controlled manner through about eight stations within the Battery Peck footprint. Visitors will be inside the fortification and learn more about how a seacoast artillery battery works, and learn about our ongoing restoration projects.

Gun #2 (north gun) will be fully operational and ready for visitors to experience. Members on the gun platform will guide visitors through operating its various components and help them understand the different aspects of how the gun itself functions. While there will be no gun drills, visitors will be able to operate the gun and using the telescopic sight, and track any ships moving in the channel.

The Harbor Defense Lantern Tour ends at 9pm at Battery Gunnison/Peck.

Visitors will be escorted back to the main post area near Bldg #28. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight. Expect to walk a total of two miles. Also remember that historic fortifications are NOT ADA accessible. The stairs are steep and one needs to hold onto railing.

This event will happen, rain or shine.
