Battery Arnold provided an outstanding station to discuss munitions and munitions
handling, with various displays related to the 12-inch guns and other seacoast
weapons. These included an M1904 telescopic sight, M1906 major-caliber base-detonating
fuse, 12-inch powder-can cover, 10-inch dummy round and powder bag, 16-inch
2,240 lb dummy AP round, and numerous charts, as well as a thermos with ice
water to keep everyone hydrated, since the temperatures were in the 90s and
humidity was very high. A good view of the overall display is below, with SGT
Turner getting some water, PVT Bonaccorsi reviewing a chart, and PVT Minton
discussing munition handling with a visitor.
In the next photo, PVT Minton explains the ammunition hoist
at Battery Arnold to a visitor.
The remaining two stations were the power generation room and Battery Arnold's battery commander's station. The photo below shows MAJ Lassiter and SGT Turner in the BC station. Standard equipment included four EE-91 telephones and an M1910A1 azimuth instrument on a pier mount.
The Salem Light Artillery masterfully interpreted an outstanding display of Civil War to 19th-Century field artillery cannon and Gatling guns, which proved a very powerful draw to the public.
